Most of tours will take you to Isabela it is a common tour. There are some new 8 day itineraries alternatives in ships that will take you around the North West (which includes Isabela) and the South East (which usually visits more islands). It is adviced to try avoiding an itinerary that visits only nearby islands, becuase these tend to offer less diversity. Of course, with some more money you can take a 15 day cruise and go back home with way more pictures, experiences, and enjoyment.

Budget can be a limiting factor for visiting the Galapagos Islands. Some cruise price can go for around $1,600 for a standard most economic (basic ship) 8 day cruise, per person to as high as $5,000. Of course, there are often interesting deals that comes available, and you have to keep on looking for those in the internet. We have found very decent ships with great tour guides in the $2,500 range.

A season that you could avoid to go to the Galapagos Islands is Christmas. This is the busiest time of year in the Galapagos Islands, if you DO want to go during that season, it is adviced to plan with a year or more to have more options to choose from.

Ecuador with Venezuela and New Zealand are the only countries in the world to ban the use of giant nets by fishing vessels, which is called trawling; that is a destructive way of fishing by scraping the seabed, destroying the ecosystems that finds in its path. After the vessel’s catch anything that is not sell-able is wasted. Such nets have caused serious impacts worldwide, causing damage to several species such as dolphins, whales, and one of the most valuable ecosystem we have, which is the coral reef and all the species that depend on it.

What activities are most impacting to the sea:

Exactly!!, trawling is the most destructive activity taking place in the oceans.

This new Law was approved in March 2012 and will come into effect in December 2012, with this action, Ecuador wants to open the door to sustainable fishing, selective, less shocking, and friendlier with the environment, that goes in concordance with the New Constitution of Ecuador of 2008. This new law is expected to promote artisan fishing that provides livelihood to thousands of families who depend on fishing.  Artisan fishermen way of fishing is less shocking because their nets are much smaller or use hooks. This will allow the ecuadorian seabed to recover from the impact of years of unsustainable fishing.
